Writing for a Non-Academic Audience and Putting Your Area Studies Expertise to Use

Ali Scotten is an analyst specializing in the security, politics, and culture of the Middle East. He has 15 years of experience serving business and government clients on a wide range of projects, including political risk analyses, travel security assessments, and due diligence investigations. Ali graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.A. in Near Eastern Studies. He holds an M.A. in anthropology from the University of Chicago and a M.S. in international relations from Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. His commentary on the Middle East has appeared in a variety of outlets, including the Washington Post, The Guardian, The Christian Science Monitor, National Interest, and Al-Monitor.

Ali will provide a workshop on how to write policy briefs for non-academic audiences, and will discuss how his background in Middle East Studies has benefitted his career in international relations.
