Dr. Burke is Professor Emeritus of modern Middle Eastern and world history and the author and editor of numerous books and articles on Middle East and North African history, orientalism, environmental history and world history. He is the author of Prelude to Protectorate in Morocco, 1860-1912: Patterns of Pre-Colonial Protest and Resistance (Chicago: Chicago University Press, 1976), Arabic translation 2013 and The Ethnographic State: France and Moroccan Islam (forthcoming).In June 2013, Professor Burke graciously donated his collection of approximately 500 books on North African history to the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies.  A reception and dedication of this collection will take place after the talk.Co-sponsored by the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, School of Anthropology, Department of History, and School of International Languages, Literatures, and Cultures DR.
