She became the first woman to win the Best Director award at the Fajr International Film Festival for “Nargess” in 1991 and has since become known for her unflinching portrayal of social issues. Her acclaimed films, including “The Blue Veiled” and “Under the Skin of the City”, explore Iran's social and political complexities, earning her numerous awards and recognition in the international film community.

Banietemad’s influence extends beyond filmmaking. In 2002, her documentary “Our Times” became the first of its kind to be released in Iranian cinemas, marking a significant milestone in Iranian cinema. She has received several prestigious honors, including an honorary doctorate from the University of London and the Prix Henri Langlois. A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 2017, Banietemad continues to use her work to challenge societal norms and inspire change, carving a path for women in the film industry and advocating for social justice through her powerful storytelling.
