Join MENAS alumnus (MA 2009) Tylor Brand for a discussion of his new book, Famine Worlds: Life at the Edge of Suffering in Lebanon’s Great War (Stanford University Press, 2023). Brand details the calamities during WWI that devastated lands that would become Lebanon: famine led to unspeakable suffering, starvation, and mass death. The deadly crisis reshaped society, killing untold thousands and transforming people’s lives, interactions, and worldviews. Famine Worlds peers at the famine from the perspectives of wealthy merchants, dwindling middle classes, and those perishing in the streets. In doing so, it shows how individual struggles had social effects, influencing relationships, policies, and even the historical memory of generations to come.
