The Sound of Arab Culture

When

Where

In this fluid confluence of lecture and performance, Karim Nagi leads a tour into the soul of traditional Arab music, revealing what music teaches us about culture. Using multiple instruments, Nagi illuminates his tradition’s connection to the intimate aesthetic of Chamber music, the microtonal timelessness of Early music, and the extemporaneous adventurism of Jazz. He performs on multiple percussive instruments from Egypt, Syria, Morocco and the Arabian Peninsula, along with a 7-string version of the Buzuq lute, as well as short examples of regional folk dance. He poetically weaves in educational information to help the audience hear past political caricature, and absorb the genuine Arab culture that is carried by these melodies and rhythms.
