CMES awards record number of Middle East language fellowships for summer 2015

April 20, 2015

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) at the University of Arizona, one of 15 Title VI National Resource Centers in the U.S. for Middle Eastern Studies, will award a record 13 Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships to both undergraduate and graduate students for summer intensive language study this year. FLAS is funded through the U.S. Department of Education.

This summer’s awardees come from many diverse departments and programs across campus, including: Global Studies, Journalism, Linguistics, Middle Eastern & North African Studies, Neuroscience, Physics, Political Science, and Public Administration. Those going abroad will be heading to Jordan (Arizona in Jordan), Turkey (Arizona in Turkey), Morocco (Arabic Flagship), and Oman (Center for International Learning). Not all students though are heading abroad for their language program. One will study at University of Texas at Austin and one will remain in Tucson to participate in the University of Arizona’s intensive summer Arabic program.

Undergraduate student fellows: Bryce Levitt, Adrian Ostertag, Madeline Pickens, Christopher Saltmarch, Haley Starr, Cooper Temple, Catherine Witt, and Tasnim Zahlan.

Graduate student fellows: Hannah Gaber, Jennifer Hijazi, Abbass Isselmou, Saffo Papantonopoulou, and Miriam Saleh.

CMES annually awards merit-based Title VI FLAS grants in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish (and sometimes other Middle Eastern languages) to students at the University of Arizona in any program/department who are pursuing Middle Eastern language and area studies.
