Amb. Dunford served as ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman from 1992-1995. He served from 1988-92 in Saudi Arabia as deputy ambassador, including 15 months as acting ambassador. His other Foreign Service assignments included director of Egyptian Affairs in the Department of State in Washington, DC, and chief of the American Embassy Economic Section in Cairo, Egypt. Amb. Dunford, along with retired Iraqi Ambassador Ghassan Muhsin Hussein, is co-author of Talking to Strangers: The Struggle to Rebuild Iraq's Foreign Ministry, Southwestern College Academic Press, 2013.
