Lisa Adeli, Scholar-Escort/Trip Leader

Trip leader Dr. Lisa Adeli has traveled to nearly fifty countries on five continents, but Morocco is on her Top 10 list! Why? It is a country at the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East, and Europe (only 9 miles by sea from Spain), a country  influenced by Arab, Amazigh (Berber), Jewish, Andalusian, and sub-Saharan African cultures. The country is breathtakingly beautiful, the people are friendly, and the food is wonderful. I helped lead a teachers' group there last summer (2019) that stayed for 4 weeks. No one thought it was nearly enough time. Of course, 11 days is even less, but it will give you a taste - and make you want to return. This will be my third trip to Morocco, and I can't wait!

Lisa Adeli has a varied educational and career background. She has a BS in Foreign Service (specializing in Russian and East European Studies) from Georgetown University, an MA in History (specializing in the Balkans) from Indiana University, another MA in Teaching English As a Second Language from Indiana University, and a PhD in History (specializing in the Balkans and the Middle East) from the University of Arizona,  She speaks Serbian and Persian and reads a few other languages. She has been a community college educator (part-time for 5 years) and a high school teacher (full-time for 12 years, part-time or volunteer for another 11.) She is the full-time Director of Educational Outreach for the University of Arizona Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES), where she develops programs for teachers, community college educators, and the community - and writes grants to fund them. She has been a teacher-fellow with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the National World War I Museum, the U.S. State Department's Teaching Excellence and Achievement program, and others.

She has led or co-led many CMES abroad programs: 5 month-long Fulbright-Hays teachers' program (to Turkey and the Balkans in 2009. to Oman and Zanzibar in 2016, to Bosnia and Albania in 2017, to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in 2018, and to Morocco in 2019),  a 2-week teachers' program to Bosnia (2015), and two community programs to Bosnia in 2017 and 2019. There is definitely a pattern here.

Lisa Adeli - intrepid traveler, educator, sometimes scholar - is very excited about this travel program and invites you to come along. It promises to be a great adventure in a beautiful and fascinating place.
