Engaging Language and Culture through Innovative Technologies

The upcoming 2013 Western Consortium Middle East Language Workshop will be hosted by the University of Arizona’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES). The 2013 Workshop will explore "Engaging Language and Culture through Innovative Technologies" looking at various effective ways in which technology and especially computer-assisted language learning enhance, accelerate and support language learning and intercultural competence in students of all levels of proficiency in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish.

Dr. Gerald Lampe will give the keynote talk to open the workshop. His presentation will focus on the new Interagency Language Roundtable descriptions for competence in intercultural communication. In particular, he will discuss their application to Arabic and other Middle Eastern linguacultures.

Associate Director of the Berkeley Language Center (BLC), Dr. Mark Kaiser, will present a 2-hour hands-on training on how to use the BLC’s Foreign Film Clip database.

Dr. Sonia Shiri, Assistant Professor in the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Arizona. Dr. Shiri will offer a closing plenary address on “Developing Multi-literacies through Web-based Learning."

The workshop program will include panels and individual talks.

CMES invites abstracts from language instructors for these sessions on any aspects of innovative technology-assisted language learning. Abstracts should not exceed 300 words and must be submitted online through the registration portal.
