Laurie Zittrain Eisenberg is Teaching Professor in the History Department at Carnegie Mellon University, where she specializes in Middle East history. She holds a Ph.D. in modern Middle East history from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (1990).  Her primary area of research and publication is the Arab-Israeli conflict and peace process. She has published numerous articles and is the author of My Enemy's Enemy: Lebanon in the early Zionist Imagination, 1900-1948 (Wayne State, 1994) and, with Neil Caplan, Negotiating Arab-Israeli Peace: Patterns, Problems, Possibilities (Indiana University Press, 2010). An unusual project for which she served as consultant was “Peace Maker,” a video game simulating Palestinian-Israeli interactions.  [www.peacemakergame.com]. On-going research projects concern the June 1967 Arab-Israeli war and the efficacy of simulation and role-playing activities in teaching the Arab-Israeli conflict.

 

In a region as complicated as the Middle East, maps serve as critical visual aids for observers trying to keep track of the players and understand the implications of current events. In this colorful, entertaining and eye-opening presentation, Prof. Laurie Zittrain Eisenberg will explain both today’s headlines and the historical background of the unprecedented conflicts presently dominating the Middle East.

This lecture will begin at 7 P.M. at the Tucson Jewish Community Center located at 3800 East River Road.
