Kit Bartels directs and oversees the Fulbright Program for the Middle East and North Africa in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). She has more than 14 years of experience in the State Department and has been part of the ECA team since December 2013, serving first as Deputy Director of the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board secretariat and then as the Bureau’s Chief of Staff before moving to the Fulbright Program Office in 2016. She has also served as an Arabian Peninsula analyst with the Diplomatic Security Service and as a Senior Program Officer focused on civil society development with the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. Kit served previously as an officer in the United States Air Force, with assignments in Texas, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the state of Washington. She received two FLAS awards from the University of Arizona and completed her master’s degree in Near Eastern Studies in 2007. She has a bachelor’s degree in linguistics from Miami University in Ohio.
