Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad trip to the Balkans

CMES is pleased to announce its participation in a Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad curriculum development project: “Balkan Borderlands: Multiculturalism, Identities, and Histories in Europe’s Muslim Countries.” Funded by the U.S. Department of Education and organized in partnership with Maricopa Community College, the project will bring 7 Maricopa Community College faculty, 7 high school teachers from throughout Arizona, and two trip leaders on a month-long exploration of the Balkans. Participants will spend three weeks in Bosnia-Herzegovina and one week in Albania, where they will study the history, literature, politics, and cultures of the region as well as engaging in a study of the Bosnian language. The purpose is the development and dissemination of high school/community college curricular materials on how these peoples have negotiated – and continue to negotiate – their identity between the Middle East and Europe. The trip will be led by CMES Director of Educational Outreach Lisa Adeli, a PhD in history specializing in modern Balkan history, and Kathryn Howard, who directs internationalization efforts at Maricopa Community College.  To learn more about the project, visit our webpage: https://cmes.arizona.edu/high-school-and-community-college-educators-program-bosnia-and-albania-summer-2017
