Boren Awards
National Program Officer to Speak on Boren Awards, November 16
The Boren Awards provide funding for graduate and undergraduate students who are planning
to study in world regions critical to U.S. interests (Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern
Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East). On November 16, Meaghan Dolan,
program officer for the Language Flagship, will conduct an information session on the
application process for both the Flagship and the Area Studies fellowships. The session
for graduate students will be at 3:00 pm and for undergraduates at 4:00 pm, both in the
Honors College, Slonaker House, Room 219. Graduates should RSVP to Georgia Ehlers and undergraduates to Karna Walter by noon, November 16.
National Flagship Language Program Graduate Fellowships
The National Flagship Language Program provides 2-year fellowships that support all
academic expenses directly associated with participation in the program, including
tuition, a stipend for living expenses, and support for travel costs and health insurance
coverage. NFLP is designed to train U.S. citizens to reach professional working
proficiency in Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, or Persian. The first year of the fellowship is
intended to support study in an intensive domestic program at the flagship institution.
The second year supports study in an immersion program overseas. Fellowships are not
available in 2010 for the post-baccalaureate Russian Overseas Flagship Program.
The deadline for applications is January 14, 2010.

Boren Graduate Fellowships in Area Studies
The National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships enable
master's and doctoral level students representing a broad range of academic and
professional disciplines to add a significant language and international dimension to
their curricula. Boren Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages,
cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. national security but are less
frequently studied by U.S. graduate students. Applicants design their own programs and
may combine domestic language and cultural study with up to 12 months overseas study. The
maximum level of support for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000 and the
maximum duration is 24 months. There is also a Boren study abroad program for
undergraduates. The UA undergraduate contact is Karna Walter. The deadlines are January 28 for graduate fellowships; February 10, 2010 for undergraduate scholarships.
