Certificate in Middle Eastern Studies

CMES offers UA undergraduate students a Certificate in Middle Eastern Studies for completion of 18 credit hours of eligible UA coursework related to Middle East studies. A minimum of 9 eligible credit hours must be in non-language courses. You must also have a minimum GPA of 2.5 for the 18 credits of Middle East-related coursework.

A list of over 150 eligible courses and their descriptions is available at the Center. Please note that the list includes courses that may no longer be taught, that are not taught currently and may be taught again in the future, and those that are one-time only courses.

Eligible students will receive from CMES a letter of announcement and a questionnaire by e-mail or regular mail in the semester after completing their undergraduate degree. The Registrar’s Office provides CMES with a list of graduated students who have completed the requirements for the certificate. The certificate is not issued automatically. Students first return the completed questionnaire. Upon receipt of the questionnaire, the Center will verify eligibility and will mail the certificate to the student. Students who believe they are eligible for the certificate are advised to verify that the Registrar’s Office has their accurate current or permanent address, to which CMES will mail the letter of announcement.

For further information or to verify the eligibility of a course, please call us at 621-5450 or e-mail us.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you are interested in studying the Middle East and wish to apply to the U of A, please visit the Department of Near Eastern Studies or appropriate disciplinary department for information. Bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees are awarded by UA academic departments; the Center does not award degrees.
