Annual Photography Exhibit

OPENING RECEPTION
for the the 18th Annual CMES Photography Exhibition:
Colors & Contrasts: Shades of Meaning in the Middle East

Thursday August 28, 2008
3.30PM to 6.00PM at CMES

(Marshall Building Room 470, 845 North Park Avenue)

Come to celebrate the beginning of the CMES Photography Exhibition gracing the walls of the CMES office space during the 2008-2009 academic year. The imagery shows the vivid colors and contrasts of the Middle East, examing meanings behind colors, contrasting views, and nuances of symbolism.

For the past seventeen years, the UA Center for Middle Eastern Studies has organized and hosted an annual photography exhibit featuring images by CMES friends, faculty, students and colleagues. Selected photos are enlarged, mounted and displayed in the Center’s annual photo exhibition and remain on exhibit throughout the academic year. Photos may also be published on our website and selected for CMES advertising and promotional purposes.

The Most Recent Exhibition (2006-2007):
Arts and Artisans

The images in this collection focussed upon the theme of Arts and Artisans in a wide range of Middle Eastern settings. Included in the exhibition were works of art, both ancient and modern, artists and craftsmen engaged in their production, and other imagery reflecting the theme. The fifty pieces in the collection consisted of the work of twenty-two photographers, all students, faculty and the wider public from among the CMES community. The exhibition was on display throughout the 2006-2007 academic year during CMES opening hours.

Other CMES Photography Exhibitions:

The CMES annual photography exhibits, which are free and open to the
public, feature approximately forty-five photographs each year on a wide
variety of topics. Photographs are submitted by CMES friends, affiliated
faculty and members, students, and colleagues. Recent exhibits have had
the following themes: In Motion, Sounds and Silences, Celebrations: Sacred
and Secular, Architecture in the Middle East, and Water as Resource in the Middle East.

All proceeds benefit the CMES Undergraduate Scholarship fund.
